Beware of Ransomware
Please read this to ensure the safety of your data and business.
We have seen an increase in the amount of companies infected by the Cryptowall Ransomware.
Only 30% of businesses will survive complete data loss and this is a real threat!
What is ransomware?
Ransomware is a type of malware which restricts access to the files that it infects, and demands a ransom paid to the creator(s) of the malware in order for the restriction to be removed.
This also encrypts all other files on the network.
How did I get infected?
Undetected internet or email.
Mostly in the form of a .js file eg. myresume.js and zip files related to a proof of payment. i.e attachment: "your payment..pdf.zip"
Clicking on Links on advertising parts of websites that reads - "Speed up your pc now" and "You have 125 virus on your machine- clean them now"
How do I get my files back?
- Follow the instructions and pay the ransom. You will then receive a decrypt utility that can be run from the infected computer only.
- Restore a backup and disinfect your machines.
On infected computers all files(excel, word etc) will be encrypted and will no longer available.
You will receive an error message when trying to open these files.
This file will remain in the directory and point you to the payment page.
Don’t touch the infected machine or delete any files as you may need these files for restoration.
The encrypted files are moved to the recycle bin and holds the location information of the encrypted files.
If you delete these files, you delete the location information and have to manually decrypt all files.
What are the chances of your company being hit?
The chances are very good that your company will be hacked so you need to be prepared.
How do I prevent it from happening?
Even the best Antivirus products will not prevent the attack and is unfortunately your LAST line of defense.
Moral of the story?
When in doubt, leave it out!
